International comic book artist and writer Tim McBurnie takes you through more advanced principles of drawing and character design. Tim works in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Blur studios, Relic Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast.
In this 12-week course, Tim will cover topics such as perspective, drawing forms in 3D space and painting your characters in Photoshop. There will be a strong focus on design and constructing your own characters.
This course is aimed at intermediate to advanced students and will help you build on your character design portfolio.
Tim is a freelance concept designer, illustrator and author based in Australia, specializing in character design and story development. He has worked in the French comic book market as well as animation and video games. His client list includes companies such as Editions Delcourt, Gunfire Games, Animal Logic, Ankama, Blur studios, Blizzard Entertainment, and Wizards of the Coast.
Tim has worked on multiple French graphic novels (bandes dessinées), including books he has written, designed and drawn from start to finish. He has also worked in video games doing blue sky concept design and world building, as well as following through and taking those characters vehicles, props and environments to the final model sheet. He has extensive experience and knowledge that can only come from years of hard work, self-study, and the love of creating a world from nothing.

Character Design 2 is advanced character design, students should have completed at least one semester of Character Design 1 before attempting this course. Portfolio entry.

- Keyshot/Keyframe – Visualising a story moment for production (film, games etc), communicating an idea
- Designing a world for your character
- Creating a visual hierarchy
- Adapting/adjusting your work from feedback

- Creating personality, proportion, gesture and expression
- Creating an illustration
- Thumbnails and story development

These classes will push your drawing, painting, modeling/texturing and design skills to the next level. During the courses you will learn how to how to use industry specific programs with a focus on building your portfolio/reel. You will get to see production techniques used in the industry in every class with the LIVE demos. Each CDW course is taught by working industry professionals who have worked for a range of international companies such as Disney, Blizzard Entertainment, Rising Sun Pictures, WETA, Wizards of the Coast and LEGO just to name a few.
