Video game environment designer, LEGO concept artist and matte painter Simon Scales takes you through the art of creating compelling digital art in this 12-week course. This course teaches the fundamentals of digital painting including colour theory and design theory. You will gain a thorough understanding of how to use Photoshop and a WACOM tablet.
Simon will cover topics of how to generate ideas quickly, gather reference, paint interesting compositions and use perspective that help form the basis of fully realized digital paintings. Simon will then work with you put these into practice within your own work. The final few weeks will focus on lighting and colour and Simon helps you focus on creating artwork for your portfolio.
Simon Scales is a freelance video game concept artist and matte painter based in Australia. He is both the owner of CDW Studios as well as an instructor for various courses. Since 2008 Simon has provided key concept art and matte-paintings for the LEGO Group. He also worked on the game DeBlob 2: The Underground for THQ, and has developed concept art for numerous video game companies and publishers. These include End Game Studios and Blue Tongue Entertainment.

Semester 1 2019
These classes will push your drawing, painting, modeling/texturing and design skills to the next level. During the courses you will learn how to how to use industry specific programs with a focus on building your portfolio/reel. You will get to see production techniques used in the industry in every class with the LIVE demos. Each CDW course is taught by working industry professionals who have worked for a range of international companies such as Disney, Blizzard Entertainment, Rising Sun Pictures, WETA, Wizards of the Coast and LEGO just to name a few.
