Simon Scales

Simon Scales is a freelance video game concept artist and matte painter based in Australia. He is both the owner of CDW Studios as well as an instructor for various courses. Since 2008 Simon has provided key concept art and matte-paintings for the LEGO Group. He also worked on the game DeBlob 2: The Underground for THQ, and has developed concept art for numerous video game companies and publishers. These include End Game Studios and Blue Tongue Entertainment.

CDW Studios is pleased to present Simon Scales’ Introduction to Digital Painting and Theory. In this lecture Simon will share how to create detailed and rich environments using Adobe Photoshop. Simon will start by showing how to paint very simply in black & white while at the same time discussing complex principles that are sometimes hard to manage while you are painting. Simon will talk about depth, scale, perspective and value. How you can use these basic principles to build up very complex paintings.

Further on in the lecture Simon will show how to create colour thumbnails and the process he uses to color paintings up from B&W sketches. He will also go over how to add the finishing touches to a painting including texture, lighting and incorporating photos into your work.

In this lecture Simon will share how to create detailed and rich environments using Adobe Photoshop. You will get to watch two fully realized production paintings from the beginning of the process through to completion. In volume 2, Simon will start directly in color, sharing his process for how to create quick color thumbnails that can be used as a starting base for a finished production painting. Simon will cover the basic principles of painting that are discussed in depth in volume 1. In volume two you will get to see how to use more advanced principles of texture, lighting and using photos to help assist your painting process. Learn about more technical Photoshop aspects, creating groups, using layer masks, curves, levels and layer clipping.
