3D Animation 1

Prerequisite: None.

Overview: Introduction to 3D Animation in Maya, which then progresses into more complex actions.

Dur­ing this 12-week workshop, you will learn some of the fun­da­men­tal prin­ci­ples of ani­ma­tion with an empha­sis on how to make that process cre­ative and fun. Class­es will be cov­er­ing uni­ver­sal ani­ma­tion con­cepts like ​“keyframes”, ​“tim­ing and spac­ing”, ​“over­lap­ping action”, as well as the more gen­er­al sto­rytelling and act­ing per­for­mance skills plus the soft­ware skills need­ed in Maya.

Each week you will watch a demo of the instruc­tor animating live, you are wel­come to animate along with the instruc­tor and ask ques­tions. After each class you will receive your home­work assign­ment for the week, and at the begin­ning of each class you will receive feed­back on your work.

Topics that will be covered throughout the 12 week workshop:

  • Introduction to Maya
  • Universal principles of Animation
  • Blocking and timing
  • Posing
  • Using reference
  • Creating animation from scratch
  • Creating polished animation

The hardware requirements for the workshop are:

  • Laptop (MacBook Pro or i7 PC laptop with 16GB RAM are recommended).
  • Wacom tablet or Mouse. Any size is good.
  • Notepad and pens/pencils for note-taking.

Instructor Bio

Joe Helmore

Joe Helmore is an experienced 3D animator with five years of tertiary education including a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design and a Diploma of 3D Animation. As a character animator, he has worked for Assembly LTD, Animal logic, Fuel VFX, Mighty Nice, Plastic wax and Blockhead VFX. He knows what it takes to be an industry professional and is keen to pass on his knowledge to hungry artists!
