Introduction to Concept Art - April 2022

This is our first holiday workshop of 2022!

During this 2-day holiday workshop, Nate will give students an introduction to a professional workflow that Concept Artists use when working at a Hollywood film or game studio. This workshop is perfect for those who are curious about concept art and interested in levelling up by combining 2D and 3D.

Day 1

The first day will be an introduction to drawing in Adobe Photoshop with a series of small projects that students can follow along live in class.

Nate will cover the following principles:

  • Drawing
  • Intro to Photoshop
  • Shape Design
  • Composition
  • Thumbnails
  • Values

Day 2

The second day will be an introduction to Blender ( and Nate will demonstrate how you can combine simple 3D skills to help improve your 2D drawings and designs. You will be able to follow along with Nate to create your own concept art piece for your portfolio.

What you will need:

  • Your own devices so you can follow along - laptop and drawing tablet (we do not supply any equipment).
  • If you don't have it already, please download Blender prior to the workshop. It is a free program.
  • Adobe Photoshop (if you have an equivalent program you are welcome to use it but the Instructor will be working in Photoshop)

WHEN: APRIL 27TH - 28TH, 2022

TIME: 10AM - 4AM (ADL Time) There will be a break for lunch - the time will be announced during the workshop.

WHERE: Myer Centre, Level 4/14-38 Rundle Mall, Adelaide SA 5000.

ONLINE: Link to live stream will be sent out to registered emails one day prior to the workshop.

COST: $120 per student (inclusive of both days)

Things to keep in mind...

  • The recommended minimum age for holiday workshops is 15 years old, and the content is aimed at beginners to intermediate level artists.
  • Participants are responsible to BYO tools. For this workshop you will require Photoshop, Blender or other drawing software and a laptop/tablet. You can also use a notebook/sketchbook to follow along and take notes. There are powerboards at every desk so there is access to power, and WIFI.
  • Workshop payment is non-refundable.
  • Food & beverages are not included. BYO lunch (fridge and microwave available on site) or purchase food from the food court on the lower ground floor of the Myer Centre.
  • We are currently observing COVID-19 safety procedures. COVID sign in required on arrival and hand sanitation stations will be provided.
  • Use glass atrium lifts 14 and 15 to access level 4 (these are the lifts closest to the King William Street side of the building).
